Solar Eclipse

Ensuring Student Safety During the Solar Eclipse

Dear Putnam County Schools Parents and Guardians,

On the afternoon of Monday, August 21, 2017 between 1:00 to 4:00 P.M. our region will experience a partial solar eclipse.  A solar eclipse occurs when the moon moves between the sun and earth, blocking all or a portion of the sun’s rays.

While medical professionals advise it is always dangerous to look directly at the sun without appropriate eye protection, out of an abundance of caution, the district is taking extra steps for your student’s safety.

  • We will remain open and on a regular schedule on Monday, August 21, 2017.
  • Teachers and/or schools that have purchased viewing glasses compliant with the ISO 12312-2 international safety standard and at the discretion of their principals will be allowed to proceed with planned viewing events.  Out of an abundance of caution, all schools are being encouraged to share the viewing experience with their students by utilizing television feeds and internet live streams.
  • Teachers have been provided with resources and lessons about the solar eclipse that are aligned with West Virginia’s content standards.  Teachers will talk with students about the dangers of looking directly at the sun at any time, but especially during the solar eclipse.
  • As an additional precaution, students will not be permitted outside for any activities other than those planned and approved during the hours of 1:00-4:00 P.M.  This would include recess, afterschool day care programs, YMCA hosted in our schools, athletics, band, etc.  As school is dismissed, staff will be on hand to instruct students not to look directly at the sun and to monitor them as they exit their schools.

Because the eclipse will continue during our dismissal times, we ask  parents of students who drive, walk, bike or ride the bus to and from school to further reinforce the dangers of looking at the sun while they are on their way home Monday, August 21st.

We appreciate your understanding and support during this unique learning experience and request that you talk with your child regarding the eclipse prior to Monday, August 21.
